Eddie Arcaro won the 1945 Derby on Hoop Jr., but when he gave up the mount in the Preakness, he did so to honor a commitment to ride Devil Diver that day in the Suburban Handicap, according to Allan Carter at the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga, N.Y..
