Althea Gibson broke the color barrier for women playing tennis in the mid-1950s, but it is Venus Williams and her sister Serena who have pushed the sport forward for young African-American women. Nobody who has seen her draw from deep emotional and physical reserves to fight back from a deficit in a big match can doubt that Williams represents that estimable character quality known as grit.
